Quantum Learning®

Facilitating a revolution in teaching and learning

March 2008 - Posts

  • Our last post gave you an overview of the 8 Keys of Excellence. Today, we’ll go into more depth on the first Key, Live in INTEGRITY.

Integrity is first about knowing yourself - knowing your values, your desires, your talents, your dreams - and then being true to that self, in all your actions and interactions. Integrity is behavior congruent with your values. When your actions are aligned with your values, you conduct yourself with authenticity, sincerity and wholeness. When you clarify your values, it helps you set goals that are consistent with those values. Together, your values and goals bring a sense of passion and purpose to your work and your life.

A lot of people simply act as they feel like acting, then find some justification - any justification - for why they did what they did. Their actions are largely unconsidered. Highly successful people, in contrast, use their values to steer their actions. They reflect, and then act. Their values motivate their actions, because they choose their actions to harmonize with their values.

Check your motivation - can you be honest enough with yourself to really admit why you’re doing something? Is it really a reflection of your values, or a reflection of what you want at the moment?

Choose your behavior to reflect your values, and you’ll move through life with authenticity, sincerity, and wholeness. When you live with integrity, it’ll show. People will trust you, almost instinctively. They’ll think of you as a person of your word. You’ll be known for your strong character. When you live with integrity, you’ll enjoy a clear conscience. You’ll be filled with good feelings about yourself. Those good feelings will pour into everything you say and do. Integrity fosters trust and respect, the cornerstones of good relationships and good relationships are vital to success in all aspects of life.

Align your actions with your values.

    Live what you value.
If you value honesty, be truthful.
If you value keeping your word, follow through.
If you value being fair, do what you expect others to do.

Your identity is who you are. Your integrity is an expression of who you are.

    • What do you value?
    • How do these values show up in your life?
    • Do your current actions support your values?

    Affirmations for INTEGRITY:

    • I have stated beliefs and values.
    • I know and understand them.
    • My behavior reflects them.

"Integrity simply means not violating one’s own identity." - Erich Fromm

  • During my long career, I've read hundreds of books and formulas for success in business. Nearly all have lists of things to do or say that are supposed to make you excel. Things like, "Seven Steps to Success" or "Five Principles of Prosperity." Unfortunately, I find that most of these wind up framed as "words on the wall" – empty phrases that aren't read and don't inspire anyone to action.

I know from experience that the 8 Keys of Excellence that I have lived for more than 25 years are far more than just words. They are principles of behavior that inspire people to try great things – and succeed. These Keys have constantly propelled me forward, helping to bring purpose, meaning and fulfillment to my life and my work.

The 8 Keys are also the foundation of our Quantum Learning Network pre-teen and teen summer camps and our school programs and they are the principles we follow in our office. Invest a few minutes with the Keys now and if you find that they bring a few rays of sunshine into your work and life, the investment will be well worth your while. We'll take a deeper look at each key in upcoming blogs, but this will whet your appetite!

    LIVE IN INTEGRITY
Align your actions with your values

    Live what you value.
If you value honesty, be truthful.
If you value keeping your word, follow thorough.
If you value being fair, do what you expect others to do.

    FAILURE LEADS TO SUCCESS
View failures as information for learning

The only real failure is not learning from your mistakes.
    Ask yourself:
What have I learned from this experience?
What value can I find in it?
What will I do differently next time?

    SPEAK WITH GOOD PURPOSE
Give positive, honest and direct communication

Speaking with Good Purpose is the cornerstone of healthy relationships.
When you give someone honest, direct feedback with good intention, what results?
    You cut through the "chatter."
    You build trust.
You make people sit up and listen when you speak.

THIS IS IT! — LIVE IN THE NOW
Make the most of every moment

By making something else IT, you miss what's going on around you in the moment. Each moment, each task, counts.

    AFFIRM YOUR COMMITMENT
    Do whatever it takes

By being willing to do whatever it takes, you can literally change the world.

    TAKE OWNERSHIP
    Be accountable and responsible

Be someone who can be counted upon, someone who responds.

    STAY FLEXIBLE

  • by Chicka Elloy, SuperCamp Programs Manager

In a nutshell, SuperCamp is an academic summer camp that has been helping students become more successful since 1982. Bobbi DePorter, our founder and president, first studied accelerated learning methods with educational pioneer Dr. Georgi Lozanov. These methods are the basis of SuperCamp, which she co-founded with Eric Jensen and further developed with Joe Chapon. They felt that students are seldom taught learning skills, and that learning how to learn can make a big difference in their academic results as well as in their lives.

The first summer camp, with 64 students attending, was held in July 1982. Results were so impressive that the company grew quickly and the word spread. SuperCamp has now graduated over 48,000 students from all 50 states and over 80 countries. The company operates under the name Quantum Learning Network (QLN), which produces SuperCamp, QL Education programs, Quantum Business programs and a range of books and products about learning and life skills for parents, students, teachers, school administrators, business people and others.

SuperCamp is based on concepts that make learning fun and easy, along with positive peer support and carefully orchestrated environmental factors. It is one of the most comprehensive summer camp programs for helping students, including teens, pre-teens and college-age students, by providing lasting skills in such diverse areas as reading comprehension, study skills, writing skills, critical thinking and life skills, to name a few.

Thanks to the vision of our Quantum Learning Network president and co-founder, Bobbi DePorter, and the energy of thousands of talented staff members, SuperCamp has grown over the years to become one of the most highly respected summer camp programs among parents and educators. From its small beginnings in 1982, SuperCamp will hold 36 programs in the U.S. this summer for approximately 3,000 students. Kids from 4th grade to college and straight A to struggling will acquire learning and life skills that bring them greater self-confidence and motivation, and higher grades.

SuperCamp programs are held on prestigious college campuses throughout the U.S.: Stanford, Cal State San Marcos, and Claremont Colleges in California; University of Washington in Seattle; Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Drake University in Iowa, Cornell University in New York, and Wake Forest University in North Carolina. Internationally, programs are offered in Switzerland, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda.

We're proud of our long-term results ... here are a few statistics about SuperCamp graduates:

    • 68% increase motivation
    • 73% improve grades
    • 81% increase confidence
    • 84% increase self-esteem
    • 98% continue to use skills learned at SuperCamp

(This study involved over 6,000 SuperCamp graduates, ages 12-22, and utilized both qualitative and quantitative data.)

Quantum Learning works at every level to motivate teachers and improve academic performance.

Quantum Learning is proven to increase student achievement. Our training components focus on research-based teaching and learning methods including the creation of effective learning environments, administrative and instructional leadership training, design and delivery of content, effective learning and life skills, and school improvement through evaluation.

By using what we call the Quantum Learning FADE model in our school programs, we build a strong FOUNDATION of aligned principles, beliefs, agreements, policies and rules (community); an empowering ATMOSPHERE of trust, safety, and a sense of belonging; a dynamic and engaging curriculum DESIGN; and a supportive ENVIRONMENT that enhances the learning process.
